Archery in schools is particularly suited to both male and female students displaying any, some or all of the following characteristics:-

      • A wish to try or practice archery
      • Those whose character does not fit with team games of football, rugby, netball etc
      • Those who are physically less robust and/or under/overweight
      • Those who are impaired physically or in the senses.

Visual Impairment, deafness, limb deficiency etc can be accommodated as can those using mobility aids. Physical and Mental impairment must be assessed on an individual basis and if suitable, and dependent on the level of impairment, may require an accompanying helper to practice.

The Association for Archery in Schools (AAS) is the established national framework for the promotion of the Olympic sport of archery in schools and it has a well established incentive scheme for those individuals taking part in the scheme. It holds annual competitions for schools or groups within the scheme. It is well represented in the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS), the NGB for Archery, who in turn promote archery in schools and youth groups by its Junior Archery Club membership concessions and junior awards scheme (JAWS).

Archery as part of the GCSE and/or “A” level curriculum also has its place in the mainstream school agenda. There are established courses by OCR, Edexcel and other exam bodies for Archery. This is also is a good fit with other mainstream curriculum subjects such as Science – physics and biology, Mathematics, Technology, History etc.
